Moving is its own kind of mess, and the cleaning needed at the end of a lease is different from the cleaning you want before you unpack in a new place. I run two different checklists depending on which one you need.
Move-Out Cleaning
Built around what property managers and landlords actually check at a walkthrough, not just a general clean. Kitchen appliances inside and out, bathroom grout and fixtures, baseboards, inside cabinets and closets, and anything a deposit inspection typically flags. For the full room-by-room checklist I work from, read Move-Out Cleaning Checklist: What Landlords Actually Check on the blog.
Move-In Cleaning
Different goal: get the house genuinely clean before your belongings are in it. An empty house allows me to get into cabinets, drawers, closets, and corners that are hard to reach once it is full of furniture. Most people only get one shot at cleaning a home while it is still empty, so it is worth doing properly before move-in day.
Timing It Right
Book as close to the actual move date as you can on both ends: right before your final walkthrough for a move-out, and right before your things arrive for a move-in. An empty house is faster to thoroughly clean than one that is still full of boxes, so timing it around the move, not around convenience, gets you a better result.
