Most of my clients with pets do not actually have a dirty house, they have a hair problem. Vacuuming the floor handles maybe half of where pet hair and dander actually end up. Here is a more realistic plan.

- Upholstered furniture, especially the sides and crevices of couches and chairs
- Baseboards, where airflow pushes loose hair and it collects along the edge of every room
- Air vents and the tops of door frames, from dander circulating with the AC
- Under furniture that never gets moved
- Curtains and blinds near windows pets like to sit by
What I Do Differently for Pet Homes
I use upholstery attachments on couches and chairs instead of just wiping the surface, pay extra attention to baseboards every visit instead of occasionally, and vacuum vent covers when they need it, not just the floor beneath them. Hard floors get a second pass with a microfiber mop, since a dry pass alone just pushes dander around instead of lifting it.
Between-Visit Habits That Actually Help
- Brush your pet a few times a week, especially during spring and fall shedding seasons, it is the single biggest lever you have
- Use washable throws or covers on the spots your pet favors on the couch
- Run the vacuum over high-traffic rugs between visits if you can, even a quick pass
- Wipe down baseboards near pet beds or favorite spots with a dry cloth once a week
When Dander Is the Real Issue, Not Hair
If someone in the house has allergies, hair is the visible problem but dander is the one that actually affects them, and it is smaller and harder to see.
